For the course you need a current (current = not older then 24 months) SIM
and IRM. These can be ordered from USPA.
TUNNEL TRAINING
SkydiveRatings and Tunnelcoach.com work together to incorporate tunnel training in our pre-course. We have tunnel time reserved for every AFF course this winter.
Tunnel training has proven to be very valuable. It is a great learning tool for anyone.
Tunnel coaching has been especially helpful for tandem instructors who are a little rusty on their belly flying skills, freeflyers who don't fly on their belly too much anymore, problems with slow falling or just anyone who would like to add tunnel training in preparation for the AFF rating course.
Challenging the course:
If you have an expired USPA AFF RATING or if you hold a current foreign AFF rating you can challenge the AFF course. Contact us to learn more about the specifics
The USPA AFF Proficiency Card:
The AFF proficiency card is in the back of the IRM or can be downloaded from USPA’s web-site.
This card needs to be signed off in the required areas before the course starts If you are already an instructor you can skip the topics that are
marked with a star (*).
The first thing you should do if you consider taking the course is look at the proficiency card to see what needs to be done prior to the course. It may take some time to complete the signatures on the card. The signatures will be valid for 24 months so don't worry about starting too early.
Some topics will get signed during the course by the course director. This is all marked on the card itself and is pretty much self explaining.
The written test:
One of the requirements to pass the AFF rating course is pass a written exam
with at least 80%. AFF course candidates need to make the “General Instructor” and the “AFF Instructor “exam. The questions for this exam are in the back of the IRM, so are the empty answer sheets.
All candidates must complete the open book test prior to attending the course. A score of 80 % is required to pass the test. For those who show up without the test completed or do not score at least 80% on the first test, a 100 % score will be required on the test that is taken during the course
The course:
- The course starts with one up to one and a half day of classroom.
- Every candidate will be evaluated on ground preparations.
- The first 2 jumps during the course are practice evaluation jumps. After the
practice jumps the “real” evaluation jumps begin. (a maximum of 4 eval jumps) See AFF pre-course if you need more practice than the 2 jumps that are included in the course.
- a Cat. C evaluation jump main side
- a Cat C evaluation jump reserve side
- a Cat D evaluation jump
- a Cat. C ground preparation
- a Cat. D ground preparation
- Pass the written test.
An AFF evaluation jump will be satisfactory when 75 % of all segments on the “AFF in-air skills and instruction evaluation” form is scored as satisfactory. The evaluation forms are in the IRM.
With the courses becoming smaller they can be done in a shorter amount of time. A private course can be done in 3 to 4 days,a course of 3 candidates takes up to 5 days.Due to our busy schedule private courses might be hard to schedule, but do not hesitate to ask.
In the AFF pre-course you can make practice jumps and receive coaching in the specific AFF in-air skills. For instance flying hard exits, slot flying with a moving student, reading the body position and giving handsignals, stopping spins, rolling over an inverted student, assisting with deployment including pulling for the student, etc, etc. The pre-course will prepare you 100% for the evaluation jumps. The course itself includes 2 practice jumps. If you like some more preparation make sure you attend the pre-course
